Open Source

Open Source software (OSS) is computer software that is available free and permits users to use, change and improve the software, and to redistribute it to other users.  A good example of an open source learning management system is MOODLE.  MOODLE can be downloaded and implemented on your local server and customized by adding additional open source modules like iPodcast, OpenBiblio, Time Table, Progress Tracker and many more modules contributed by the MOODLE community of developers.  With a little knowledge of php coding, a MOODLE site can be designed to meet your needs.  Check out these MOODLE sites used in Ohio:

Sakai is another open source learning management system.  A Java-based application, Sakai is designed to be scalable, reliable, and extensible.  Systems like Sakai and MOODLE are also known as Course Management Systems (CMS) and Virtual Learning Environments (VLE).  Ohio institutions using Sakai include

  • Hiram College
  • Lake Erie College
  • Lourdes College
  • Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM)
  • The Ohio State University
  • University of Dayton
  • Walsh University
