Germs in Space
Program Description: Understanding how Earth-based microbes react in a space environment may help us to better understand microbial life should we find it on other planets. In space, unwanted microbes such as viruses, bacteria, protests and fungi can be extremely dangerous to human life and hardware. This may potentially lead to astronauts contracting infections onboard the International Space Station and to the disintegration of on-board systems. Moreover, if stowaway microbes find themselves on robotic instruments, such as rovers that we send to other planets, they can infect these sterile environments. The workshop will focus on these factors and conversely, the reasons that microbes can be useful for humans in the space environment. During the hands-on segment, students will explore the temperature dependence of the metabolic rate of anaerobic microbes. 45-minute presentation followed by 45 minutes of hands-on activities.

Space Optics: The Impact on Visual Acuity
Program Description: Did you know that approximately one in three space-walking astronauts have experienced a temporary reduction in their visual acuity? That is, images become fuzzy and difficult to interpret. The Earth, space and underwater environments each pose challenges to an astronaut's vision. Degradation in angular resolution, a loss of colour sensitivity and decreases in their visual depth of field are all possible causes of this occurrence. In space, elements of the astronaut's eye such as pupil size, shape of cornea and relative index of refraction may change. In the hands-on segment students will demonstrate how the optical path of light rays is modified by changes in the index of refraction of optical materials.

Building of the Transcontinental Railroad
Program Description: One day, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln sitting at his desk in the White House in Washington DC , signed a document that fixed the eastern terminus of the proposed rail route at Omaha, Nebraska Territory. Within a short time dirt was flying in Nebraska and California. Thousands of workers, large numbers of teams, many supply trains, and vast quantities of equipment and supplies were employed in caring this stupendous project forward. Each month the gap between the two construction forces became shorter, and finally , on May 10 1869, after six years of strenuous effort, the rails were joined at Promontory, on the Utah desert. This endeavor was the 1800's equivalent to the United States putting a man on the moon 100 years later. This session is loaded with original documents, photos and artifacts from the Union Pacific Museum to provide your students with historical accurate “primary” information. Each teacher will receive a packet of resources and activities to use to prepare students for the connection as well as provide you with “follow-up” support material to help you to continue to explore the building of the Transcontinental Railroad as well as Westward Expansion. 1) Program opens with a basic explanation and introduction of the topic 2) We will begin interactive discussion on the building using a variety of photos, artifacts and documents 3) We will show a video on the importance of this endeavor 4) Time is set aside for questions at the closing (as well as throughout the presentation. Preparation Information Packet: Participating teachers will receive an information packet containing introductory information to use to prior to the session to familiarize students with the content to be presented. The packet contains an overview of the presentation (power point) as well a follow-up resources, activities and references. Northern Michigan University
United State Olympic Education Center
Program Description: On February 9, 1985, the U.S. Olympic Committee established an Olympic training center on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. On February 19, 1989, due to the unique academic opportunities available to athletes training at NMU, the Center was designated as the nation's first and only U.S. Olympic Education Center. Because of difficult training schedules, traveling, and a lack of facilities and coaches, elite athletes often spend much of their time away from home, making it very difficult to continue their education. That's why the U.S. Olympic Committee established the Olympic Education Center, to develop elite athletes for competition and students for the classroom. Unlike the traditional in-out Olympic training center, USOEC athletes live and train in Marquette most of the year. USOEC student athletes attend Northern Michigan University or Marquette Senior High School. They receive room and board, sports medicine services, top coaching, transportation, and access to first class training facilities at NMU and in the surrounding area. In addition, resident athletes receive in-state tuition, sports psychology, exercise physiology, counseling, tutoring and other educational services. The Olympic athlete's lifestyle is one of sacrifice and dedication. The top level athletes travel several times a year, often overseas, competing against the world's best. They must balance their daily training, travel, diet and nutrition, academics, and a social life. The USOEC is home of resident athlete programs in biathlon, boxing, cross country skiing, and short track speedskating The USOEC is presenting a 40 to 50 minute videoconferencing program from one of NMU's distant learning classrooms in which students have the opportunity to meet and interact with some of the athletes and/or their coaches. Students are treated to a display of the athletic equipment and its use, a view of the facilities, and are provided a basic understanding of the USOEC program. The program is suitable for students in grades 3rd- 8th. Scheduling is dependent upon USOEC availability.

Crime and Punishment
Program Description: This workshop combines some of the resources in the Crime and Punishment exhibition with a variety of other primary documents. The workshop aims to help pupils to use different types of documents to find out more about the types of crimes committed and punishments given from 1450 to 1900, and for pupils to consider how these vary from today. The workshop begins with pupils consulting a range of documents from three different time periods: before 1450; 1450-1750; and 1750-1900. From this activity pupils will start to uncover the different types of crime that people committed in the past, and look at the new crimes that emerged during the Industrial and Transport Revolutions. Pupils will then move on to discover the variety of punishments that were given in the past. Using a Prisoners' Record Book from 1873 they will concentrate on the types of punishment that different people received in Victorian England. Pupils will consider whether punishments varied between men and women, and between adults and children. The workshop will draw to a close with pupils discussing whether or not these punishments were fair, what the purpose behind each type of punishment was and how crime and punishment in the past is similar or different to today.
