The Risks of Life
Program Description: Is it worth playing the lottery? Does the skill and experience of the manager make a difference to a football team, or are the results too random for it to matter? When it looks to good to be true, what aren't they telling you? Which newspaper headlines are telling the truth? How can we know if someone has been wrongly accused of committing a crime? Why do coincidences happen so often? The Risks of Life will give students an opportunity to engage with questions like these through interactive game-show style videoconferences, enabling them to discover how mathematics will help them make sense of the real world in situations involving risk, probability, chance and uncertainty.

Reality Maths
Program Description: This long project is about the maths that we find all around us in the real world. The project will begin by focusing on the maths of schools, buildings and outdoor environments with an emphasis on shape, space, estimation and measurement. This will involve very practical and hands-on activities and will culminate with the students producing a maths trail based around the school grounds. We will then use Google Earth software to move beyond the physical bounds of the school and to explore the maths that we can find across the globe. Students will discover the meaning behind the numbers that appear on airport runways and they will have the opportunity to decide whether The Pentagon is regular or irregular. This part of the project will make use of statistical averages (mean, median and mode) as well as providing an introduction to the fractal qualities of coastlines. The project will finish by looking the mathematics that we find in the natural world. Much of this work will be based around the Fibonacci Sequence which occurs naturally in many places. We will look closely at the mathematics that we find in fruit, vegetables, plants and shells as well as learning about how the same mathematics decides how beautiful a person looks and is used in magic tricks. By the end of this project, the students taking part may well be looking at the world in a completely different (and more mathematical) way!

It’s not that I’m smart...
Program Description: Albert Einstein said "It's not that I'm smart - I just stick with problems longer". In the sessions we will look at some problems that are worth sticking with. All are accessible and suitable even for non-Einsteins, and all offer a rich variety of potential mathematical exploration. We'll cover lots of work in Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measure.

Remainder of One
Program Description: Yes - book a place / create an account: you will need to create an account for your school if this is the first VC you've booked with us since September 2009. You will need to obtain the book Remainder of One, by Elinor J. Pinczes for this conference. It can be obtained from Amazon books It would also be useful to have the book One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor J. Pinczes and also available from Amazon. The queen bug likes thing tidy when her bug troops parade before her. Poor soldier Joe keeps messing things up by being a remainder of one. He tries various solutions to keep the squadron of 25 in equal lines and is a very happy bug when he solves the problem. The first videoconference will be an interactive session, with marching rhymes and activities! The second videoconference is an opportunity for participating schools to show each other what they have done since their first meeting.
